  1. A plant is an organism that carries out 
  2. photosynthesis, has cellulose cell walls and 
  3. complex cells, and is immobile. A few 
  4. parasitic plants have lost the ability to 
  5. photosynthesize but are still considered to 
  6. be plants. Plants are autotrophs, that is, 
  7. they make carbohydrates from water and carbon 
  8. dioxide, and are the primary producers in all 
  9. food chains, so that all animal life is 
  10. dependent on them. They play a vital part in 
  11. the carbon cycle, removing carbon dioxide 
  12. from the atmosphere and generating oxygen.  
  13. The study of plants is known as BOTANY.
